Celebrating the community spirit of Credit Unions

MEMBERS AND staff at Wexford Credit Union enjoyed a day of celebration at the branch to mark World Credit Union Day.

The event, which is held every year, is a worldwide one that celebrates the spirit of the global credit union movement. World Credit Union Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October, every year for many decades and the Wexford branch, which is in existence for 55 years has always taken part in the day.

The local branch has 55 staff members and serves over 35,000 local members.

Loans Manager in Wexford Credit Union, David Maguire explained that there was a great atmosphere in the branch on the day, with customers enjoying free teas and coffees, cakes and refreshments, and kids were kept entertained by balloons and various displays.

One lucky, long-term member was drawn as the October winner of the Credit Union draw, securing the keys to a brand new car for himself.

John McDermott (76) from Duncormick will pick up his new motor in the coming weeks and was delighted with the win, particularly given the important role the credit union had played when he was buying his first car.

Mr Maguire explained that, many years ago, having been refused a loan by the banks and building societies, Mr McDermott went to the credit union and spoke to staff member Nancy Reck, who approve a loan of £100 for him to buy his first car.

There was a steady flow of customers through the branch during the day.
