Murrintown shows its artistic side

- By MARIA PEPPER

The work of up to 50 amateur artists was featured in the 17th annual Murrintown Community Art Exhibition held as part of the Wexford Festival Opera fringe programme.

The official opening by professional artist Una Latchford coincided with the Presidential Election and the attendance was boosted by curious members of the public arriving in Murrintown Community Centre to cast their vote and cast their eyes over the interesting artworks.

The exhibition consisted of 89 art pieces in a wide variety of media, including oil paintings, water colours, pastels and ink drawings of landscapes, still life and abstract topics along with ceramic and glass and a single large sculpture piece by Colm O’ Brien.

The artists of all ages were drawn from the local community and further afield with the organising sub-committee comprised of Mary Murphy, Sharon Murphy and Sandra Murphy (not related) operating an open-toall admission policy.

The prize for overall best exhibit as judged by members of the public was won by Molly McFadden for a well-executed painting of an elderly couple.

The winning junior artists selected by Una Latchford from Murrintown national school entries were senior student Orla Quirke and Nicky Hayes (5).

‘We have artists who entered work our very first exhibition and they are still coming’, said Maria Murphy. ‘There was a very high standard of work this year and we had a lot of people coming out of town to see the exhibition. We had a very busy time’, said Maria.

The annual exhibition provides an outlet for artist talent and raises money for the local community centre.
