Two goals in ten minutes drove Forth and Bargy on

- MICHAEL HEFFERNAN U 20 FC Division 2 q-final in Tagoat

TWO GOALS in a ten-minute period were the decisive blows as Forth and Bargy Gaels pushed Oylegate-Glenbrien aside in this one-sided Greenstar Under-20 football Division 2 championship Division quarter-final in Tagoat on Saturday.

In terribly wet and windy conditions, it was difficult for either side to get into a decent rhythm, but the home side always looked that little bit more competent.

And, after a closely-fought opening half, they completely dominated the second period, hitting two quick goals that killed their opponents off as they held them scoreless for the remainder of the game.

The eventual winners got off to a good start, with Rees Broaders opening the scoring before Shane Pettit added a second with a wonderfully taken point minutes later.

Oylegate-Glenbrien were struggling, but eventually got off the mark in the twelfth minute when Pierce Murhy’s first-time effort on goal blazed over the crossbar.

The visitors then found themselves in front midway through the half when Mike Kelly raced through from midfield and his speculative effort from 25 yards hit the bottom corner of the net.

The lead didn’t last for long however, as two minutes later Forth and Bargy put together a wonderful passing move that sent Rees Broaders through for a well-taken goal, putting his side one in front.

Shane Pettit and Eoin O’Callaghan then added points to leave three between them at the break (1-4 to 1-1).

The south county side meant business in the second-half, and it wasn’t long before they found the net, with Leigh Newport doing well to put Adam Devereux in the clear seven minutes after the re-start.

Newport then turned from provider to scorer ten minutes later with a tidy finish that completely killed the game as a contest, and in doing so it set Forth and Bargy Gaels up with a semi-final meeting against either Kilanerin of Munna Abbáin that cannot be played any earlier than the weekend of December 1-2.
