We had the annual day for past Captains and past Presidents on Sunday, commencing with a 14-hole singles competition and followed by dinner in the clubhouse.
It was great to see so many of those former officers who contributed so much to the development of our club since its formation attending. Also in attendance was our current Captain, Jack Lynn.
The winner of the 14-hole golf competition was Pat ‘Kenny’ Walsh with 31 points. In second place was Liam Ruttledge with 29 points, and in third place was Pat Geoghegan with 27 points.
After a lovely meal and the presentation of the prizes, it was time for a few drinks with these friends of so many years to recall their past experiences during the development of our club.
On Bank Holiday Monday we had, as usual, a four-person team scramble. To accommodate the large number of entries now that the shorter evenings are in, this was played over 16 holes. The results were close, with less than one shot separating the first three teams.
The winners were John Hammond (10), James Murphy (12), Larry (17) and Kathleen Murphy (33) with 48.8 shots.
In second place were Noel Martin (17), John Byrne (13), Pat Mahon (12) and Tony Walsh (13) with 49.5, and they were closely followed by Kevin Murphy (7), Patch Doyle (19), Jim Doyle (21) and Brian Morris (7) on 49.6.
Tuesday, 15-hole Seniors singles: 1, Seán O’Keeffe (25), 32 points (back six); 2, Seamus Thomas (28), 32 points; 3, Pat Geoghegan (20), 31 points.
Wednesday, 14-hole open fourball: 1, John Ffrench (10) and Tom Foran (13), 37 points (back six); 2, Peadar Dempsey (8) and John Cleary (17), 37 points.
Friday, 14-hole three-person team event: 1, Nigel Morrissey (13), Ted Mangan (16) and Eddie Cousins (24), 76 points.
Sunday, 14-hole two-person team event: 1, John O’Brien (19) and Pat Furlong (21), 52 points; 2, John Hammond (10) and James Murphy (12), 50 points; 3, Adrian Doran (7) and Paul Hynes (10), 49 points.
The weekly draw was won by Tom Foran. As the jackpot was not won, it will increase to €2,35 for next week.

A reminder that Bridge sessions, open to all, recommence in the club on Wednesday, November 7, at 9.45 a.m., and the ladies’ A.G.M. will be held on Monday, November 19, in the clubhouse (copies of last year’s minutes are available in the ladies’ locker room).
TAGHMON SOCIETY
Our next outing is a scramble in Enniscorthy Golf Club (the best course in the county) on November 10, starting at 10 a.m.
Our member, Jim McGee, will be representing us in The Heritage Golf Club next Saturday in a competition for all society winners during the year who are playing for a fantastic prize of a trip to Spain for 20 of their society members.
No pressure Jim, just remember who your friends are! We will be waiting in Enniscorthy for that phone call.

NEW ROSS SENIORS
We made a good decision last week by putting back our starting time to 11 a.m., because Jack Frost had control of the course in the early morning on Thursday.
But later on, we enjoyed a gorgeous November day with unbroken sunshine right through the afternoon. The course was in magnificent condition with a nice growth of grass on the fairways and lightning-fast greens to contend with.
In the autumn sunshine the trees were a picture to behold with coats of many colours. Talk about New England in the Fall; our oak, maple, birch and evergreens provided a kaleidoscope of many hues, matching if not beating the great American boast of their incomparable State’s display come autumn time every year.
In that peaceful setting we had the biggest number of players so far taking part, where 15 four-person teams battled it out in search of a prize. A brisk north-westerly wind kept scoring returns down somewhat, and only one team surpassed the 90 points target mark.
Eddie Keher (12), Pat Traynor (18), Paddy Bennett (20) and Tom Furlong (26) scored 91 points to claim top prize.
It took a countback to decide second and third positions respectively. Tony Harford (14), Michael Kavanagh (16), Bobby Dwyer (22) and Les Jastrebski (26) took second with 90 points courtesy of a better back nine (46/44).
Placed third on the same tally again with a better back nine (44/41) were Jimmy Furlong (12), Mikey Lee (19), Seán O hUginn (21) and Jamesie Murphy (24).
Nearest the pin prizes went to Michael Gannon on the ninth hole and Patsy Farrell on the eleventh.
A gentle reminder to all players - the draw time is 10.45 a.m. sharp, and all should be in house by then. When teams are drawn, they proceed in the order in which they came out, especially on the first tee.
They go in rotation – one-two-three – so no jumping the queue.
As and from next Thursday, November 8, we will have winter rules in operation, with placing on the fairway and in the rough within six inches of the original lie.
Our A.G.M. is scheduled for Thursday, November 29, and the Christmas outing and dinner will take place on Thursday, December 6 - weather permitting of course.

We played Quinnagh House on Sunday, with the first weekend of the turkeys taking place.
