Hore’s founder Nellie dies aged 98
THE death has taken place of 98-year-old Ellen (Nellie) Hore of Timber Lawn, Belvedere road, the founder and former director of Wexford retail institution Hore’s Stores, one of the longest established family businesses in the town.
Nellie (nee Nolan) founded the famous Wexford department store at 31 – 37 South Main Street with her late husband Johnnie in May 1945 at the end of the Second World War, selling drapery, bicycles and gramophones.
The business grew from strength to strength over the following decades, becoming a significant retail employer and serving generations of Wexford people. The flagship store spawned additional shops including Trade Winds and Bambinos. Now the only family-run department store left in Wexford, Hore’s Stores is run by the second and third generations of the Hore family. In 2015, the business celebrated its 70th anniversary and matriarch Nellie was the guest of honour at a civic reception hosted by Wexford Borough District Council, proudly accepting a special plaque from the Mayor of Wexord to mark the occasion.
Nellie who died in Knockeen Nursing Home on Friday last, was laid to rest in St. Ibar’s Cemetery, Crosstown on Monday following funeral Mass in the Church of the Annunciation, Clonard. Hore’s Stores was closed as a mark of respect following her death.
Nellie is survived by her sons Padraig, John Martin and Gerard; her daughters-in-law; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her nieces and nephews and by her extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter Breda.
