Children encouraged to be careful out there
Over one hundred primary school children from Scoil Mhuire Coolcotts, Wexford Educate Together, Gaelscoil Charman and CBS Primary School, Wexford attended a Health and Safety Authority ‘Keep Safe’ event at St. Joseph’s Community Centre.
A range of state agencies and organisations came together to deliver the programme which is directed at 5th and 6th class pupils and aims to promote safety and community awareness through involving children in a series of interactive scenarios with a strong safety theme.
Speaking about the event Joanne Harmon, Education Manager with the Health and Safety Authority said: ‘The Keep Safe initiative is specially designed for school children and is an enjoyable and interactive way for them to learn about issues like water safety, electricity, road safety and more.’
‘This kind of multi-agency approach where resources and knowledge are used together for the benefit of the community is to be welcomed and encouraged.’
The ‘Keep Safe’ event encourages children to become aware of personal and home safety, learn how to react to dangerous situations, engage in good citizenship, learn how to recognise hazards and manage risks, learn how to stay safe within the context of road safety, water safety, fire safety and site safety.
The agencies and organisations represented at the event included the Health and Safety Authority, ESB, Bus Éireann, Irish Water Safety, Teagasc, Construction Industry Federation, An Garda Síochána, Wexford Fire Services, Wexford Civil Defence and RNLI.
