Colourful lights upgrade along length of Main St.

- By MARIA PEPPER

THE entire length of Wexford’s Main Street will be festooned with a brand new set of Christmas lights this year following a ‘significant’ investment by the Borough District Council in upgrading the festive image of the county town.

The white curtain lights which adorned the Main Street for the past 10 years had reached the end of their lifespan and were beginning to cause ongoing maintenance problems, according to District Manager Angela Laffan who said it was time to replace them.

The new lights purchased from an Irish company called ‘Fantasy Lights’ are ‘more modern and more colourful’ and were erected last weekend, stretching at intervals from Redmond Square to South Main Street. People can view them for the first time on Saturday next, November 24 at 5 p.m. when they are switched on during a ceremony on the quayfront.

The District Manager said Gorey, Enniscorthy and New Ross had taken the lead in erecting new Christmas lights in recent years and it was important for Wexford do the same, to showcase the county town and attract business and shopping.

The cost of the lights has been met by the Borough District Council which is also funding Santa’s North Pole Experience on the quayfront and the Santa Express train.

The old lights were jointly financed by the Council and the Chamber of Commerce and while the Chamber has not assisted with the cost of the new lights, it does contribute to other elements of festive celebrations in the town, including next Saturday’s Christmas parade through the streets, starting at 4 p.m. in Selskar Square and large Christmas trees in Redmond Square and the Bullring.
