Taghmon shows a lot of enterprise

- By ANNA HAYES

FOR THE second year in a row, the community of Taghmon came out in force to take part in, and attend, the Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town event in their local bank branch.

A nationwide initiative, Taghmon hosted their first such event in March 2017 and were delighted to get the green light from the head office to host another in 2018. Facilitated by the bank branch, the event invited local businesses, clubs and community groups to showcase their goods and services at the evening event.

More than 40 stalls displayed their produce with everything from hurls to jewellery, food producers to community groups like the two local ICA groups (Taghmon and Camross), the Taghmon Action Group, the Family Resource Centre, and other businesses.

The special guest on the night was Nationwide presenter Mary Kennedy who proved very popular with those in attendance.

A group discussion was chaired by Alan Corcoran and featured contributions from Ms Kennedy, from Mayor Tony Dempsey and Breege Cosgrave from the Local Enterprise Office. Ms Kennedy spoke of the importance of rural communities while Ms Cosgrave outlined the many supports and grants available from the LEO for start-up businesses. Cllr Dempsey spoke of how such an event gave communities a platform for promotion and he felt there should be more opportunities for same.

Branch manager Brian Cantwell said the event had been very well attended despite the horrendous weather conditions on the evening. He thanked Taghmon GAA Club for their assistance in stewarding and car parking; Mary Kelly and Bouquets and Buttercream for providing cakes, and musician Thomas Furlong who entertained the crowd.

‘The evening was a full community effort; the bank just hosts it. But it is a good way for us to solidify our presence in the community given the various changes that have happened in banking services over the last few years.’

He pointed out that Taghmon was the only town in Wexford to host an Enterprise Town event this year.
