NEW ROSS SENIORS

After the torrential rains of the previous days which battered the course, it did not seem likely that our eagerly-awaited Christmas outing could go ahead on Thursday.

But how well do these Seniors control the vagaries of our Irish weather like they do when Thursday brought an almost dry day? Rising temperatures made for a very pleasant competition among the twelve teams taking part.

With choice Christmas fare on offer, there was an added incentive for all to make a special effort to be in the shake-up at the end. With prizes for everybody in the audience, or to be more precise for all on the playing field, the incentive was to finish high up in the scoring charts. As it turned out, there was fabulous scoring with all twelve teams clocking up totals of 90 points or better.

Quoting the old proverb - a good start is half the battle - proved very accurate this time as far as the winning team was concerned.

Like lightning out of the starting stalls came Dick Cuddihy (12), Billy Redmond (19), Tony Sexton (21) and Jamesie Murphy (24) and, with two best scores on each hole counting, they went birdie/par, scoring seven points on the first hole.

Then they repeated the same on hole two, birdie/par, for another seven-pointer, making 14 points on two holes. With that flying start and excellent teamwork and consistent scoring among the quartet, they reached the turn clocking up a terrific 54 points and, adding 46 on the homeward run, they ran out clear winners with a final total of 100 points.

Second after a countback (46/45) came Paddy Shannon (11), Jimmy Furlong (12), Fr. Ger O’Brien (22) and Martin Burke (25) with 98 points, whilst placed third on the same score were Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan (17), Larry Shannon (21), John Murphy (20) and Tom Kent (25).

In fourth place were Michael Kavanagh (16), Willie Whitty (18), Martin Harley (22) and Les Jastrebski (25) with 96 points. Fifth were Ray Shannon (14), Willie Kelly (19), Robert O’Dwyer (22) and Colin Casey (22) with 93 points.

Sixth were D. Kirwan (12), P. Goggin (17) and A. O’Connor (20) with 92 points. Seventh were John Kennedy (16), Martin Forristal (21), Richie Byrne (21) and Jamesie Wallace (21) with 92 points.

Eighth spot was filled by Tommy Ryan (16), Pat Traynor (18), Frank Boyle (23) and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (25) with 91 points. Ninth were Tony Harford (14), Richie Aylward (19) and Liam Glasheen (21) with 91 points, and tenth were Steve Travis (17), Mikey Lee (19), John Colfer (20) and Mick Wade (22) on the same score.

In eleventh place were Andy Ronan (16), Brian Dolan (21), John F. Roche (21) and Jim Kehoe (25) with 90 points. Twelfth were Tony Redmond (18), Willie Naddy (20), Michael Long (21) and Aidan Wallace (27) with 90 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Andy Ronan on the ninth hole and Michael Long on the eleventh.

Well done to Tony Harford who procured such a wonderful array of prizes for our Christmas outing. Many thanks to the restaurant who served up a top-class four-course dinner after golf, and also to Anthony and Breda in the bar for helping to make the day the success it was.
