COMMUNITY GAMES

On Saturday week last, members of the local Community Games travelled to Cavan Crystal hotel for the national area and Volunteer Awards. These awards are held annually to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of a small number of people who willingly give of their time to foster a love of sporting and cultural activities in boys and girls aged between 7 and 16 years of age.

The Community Games have a large catchment area from Crossabeg to Ballymurn, Oylegate, Glenbrien, Castlebridge, Screen, Curracloe, Ardcavan and Ferrybank areas. For the second year in a row, the area took the overall ‘Best Area in County ‘award and chairperson Anne Cowman was on hand at the function in Cavan to receive the Galway Crystal Vase as a national winner.

The area also had long serving member Mary McDonald from Crosstown in attendance to receive her award in the Adult Volunteer of the Year category. Mary too was presented with a Galway Crystal Vase. Mary has been a loyal member for a long number of years, helping to co-ordinate the local and county swimming finals. In attendance also were Alice Devine and Adrian Carr.

Congratulations to all the children who competed so well during the year and to the parents who brought them to the various events. Thanks to the schools in the area, who continue to assist the committee by getting the various notices around to the children and their parents and to all clubs who also gave of their time. A few weeks now to recharge the batteries before the 2019 season will get under way in January.

WEDDING BELLS

We send our best wishes for the future to Alex Wilson, Kyle, on the occasion of his marriage to Fiona, daughter of Mary and Eamonn Doyle, Ballymurn, which took place on Friday, November 30, in the Church of the Assumption and St Malachy, Ballymurn, with the reception for family and friends at the Clayton Whites Hotel, Wexford. Our congratulations also to Melissa, daughter of Margo and the late Paddy Carley, St Patrick’s Terrace, Crossabeg, whose marriage to Paul Dempsey, Ballymurn, took place at the Riverside Park hotel, Enniscorthy, on Friday, November 30, Athletics.

St Killian’s Athletic club held their annual general meeting in Crossabeg national school on Tuesday night of last week where there was a good attendance.

CHAIR.

Anne Marie Forde welcomed all the delegates and in her speech thanked the hard working coaches, and in particular Mick and Nicky, who focus mainly on the juvenile section, while Pavel is the main task master for the seniors. She thanked all the officers who worked tirelessly during the year, the parents who helped out at county competitions supervising the children.

The club had a number of achievements during the year, in particular the Ferrycarrig five road race (alas due to a number of factors it has had to be postponed to a later date) the Primary schools marathon which is an outstanding success and was moved from May to September to facilitate schools who were very busy with other activities in May. 2018 also saw two athletes Niall Sheil and Jack Forde qualify for Irish teams and represent not just St Killian’s but Ireland, which for a small club is a testimony to the hard work of the coaches and athletes. Her main aim for the coming season is to build the club and to encourage the children to take part in the local and Leinster competitions. It is also hoped to train up some more coaches to help spread the load.

The senior section of the club is also making good progress with Niall Sheil very much to the fore during the past year. The teenage group benefits hugely from Micks session at the Raven on Sunday mornings and would benefit from senior athletes experience in the cross over from juvenile to senior.

Secretary Kathryn Kinlough was also glowing in her tributes to the hard working coaches, the parents who give assistance at training and competitions, and the officers who help out on training nights. She complimented all the juvenile members who participated in the various competitions during the year and the club will continue to encourage entrance into these events, she said.

Jack and Amy Forde and Emma McCarthy (who received an award recently for winning the under-11 category in the winter league over the three nights) are high achieving athletes and had phenomenal success during the year and the club, she said, were immensely proud of each of them. She also commiserated with any club members and their families who suffered bereavements during the year. St Killian’s, she concluded, continues to provide a social outlet for the community and to facilitate the healthy development of athletes in a safe and fun environment.

Treasurers Niall and Alice gave a detailed account of the financial state of the clubs affairs which are most satisfactory and the PRO thanked the Wexford People for the coverage awarded to them during the year, and to all who sent on reports and results to her during the year. The Facebook page, she said continues to grow and is a great way to get the message across to parents and let them know what is going on within the club.

OFFICERS ELECTED – The following officers were elected at the annual general meeting of St Killian’s Athletic club last week, Nicky Cowman (president) Fr Jim Finn (Vice-president) Anne Marie Forde (chairperson) Niall Sheil (vice-chairperson) Kathryn Kinlough/Anne Marie Forde (secretary/Competitions secretary) Niall Sheil/Alice Devine (Joint treasurers) Anne Cowman (PRO) Mick Kehoe/Therese Finan (Child Officers) Pádraig Moriarty, Brian O’Shaughnessy, Evelyn Boggan, Gail Kavanagh, Paul Kinsella (committee members).
