Creativity to the fore as Meánscoil students showcase their designs

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

THERE was all manner of crazy creations on the catwalk at Clayton Whites Hotel in Wexford as students from Meánscoil Gharman took over the function room for their Junk Kouture Fashion show.

A capacity crowd filed in to the hotel to see what kind of creativity was on display this year and it did not disappoint as students showed off the fruits of months of hard work ahead of the national Junk Kouture competition.

The competition has grown massively in popularity over the years and sees students design and model whole outfits made entirely from recycled materials.

This year saw a total of ten outfits on display and the designers also presented their video diaries which offered a step-by-step guide to how their piece was created. As well as that there was music on the night from the school’s entrants to the Scléip competition, and a chance to see the dresses up close and personal on the catwalk.

‘It was a great night,’ said Art Teacher Danielle Dempsey. ‘We’re hopeful that a few of them will go forward to the regional final and hopefully the national final. Some of the students have worked really hard and I’m delighted with them. They were really focused on the project and I think that shows.’

Prizes were handed out on the night for a few of the school’s favourites. ‘Cardiac Address’, made out of test tubes, trays and needle covers, won Best Video, while Best Presentation went to ‘Living La Vida Mocha’ by Michaela O’Mahony - a dress made completely out of coffee paraphernalia. The big winner was ‘Video Star’ by Aoife Bridges, made entirely out of old video tapes, which scooped both the People’s Choice and Overall Winner.
