Storm causes damage at the Boat Club

-

WHILE most of us were tucked up in bed as Wexford was battered by last week’s gale force winds, the following morning they were counting the cost at Wexford Harbour Boat Club

The powerful winds saw the end of a pontoon completely broken in half, while some of the bigger floats washed away. There was also some minor damage caused to one of the club’s boats, but according to Boating Captain Damian Lynch, things could have been a lot worse.

‘I’m not sure in terms of cost what it would be to set it right, but we’re hoping to get it sorted as soon as possible,’ he said. ‘The winds were forecast, but we weren’t overly concerned at the time. It’s just one of those things really. There was no major damage.’

As a result of the damage to the pontoon, sailing was cancelled last week. According to Damian, it also presents a problem in terms of launching pleasure craft at low tide. Due to a build-up of silt in the river, it’s not always possible to use the slip-way.

Fortunately, the amount of boats heading out onto the river are at a minimum at this time of year, however, management are determined to rectify the issue as soon as possible, describing it as ‘an inconvenience, but something very solvable’.
