Wexford raises a huge €16,500 on Daffodil Day
Ten years on after losing his wife to the illness, local businessman Liam Keating continues to work tirelessly for cancer research.
And for Daffodil Day this year Liam, and countless others throughout Wexford, helped raise a massive €16,545 for the Irish Cancer Society. The Castlebridge man was quick to pay tribute to those who had assisted him along the way however: ‘
So many organisations helped out. I was only the anchor person, I couldn’t have done it without all those other people. The schools were brilliant; the CBS boys organised a project of their own, the girls from the Presentation made little Scunchies and sold them - I’d never even heard of Scrunchies the Loreto girls were great too, all the schools did their bit.’
Yet, Liam believes that those who deserve the highest praise are the people of Wexford themselves. ‘They were the main people, those who were out shopping and contributed in buckets and boxes around town.’
Confirming that much of the money raised will be used locally in areas including palliative care, Liam said that people will continue to raise funds to combat a disease which has touched the lives of virtually everyone in the county. ‘There’s hardly a family in Wexford which hasn’t been affected in some way by cancer and unfortunately my own family is no exception to that, I lost my wife ten years ago with pancreatic cancer. There’s a lot of improvements being made, but it’s still a major, major issue.’
