Open invite to take part in seminar on ‘How to Age Well’

- By MARIA PEPPER

A seminar on ‘How to Age Well’ conducted by the leading Irish expert on ageing, Professor Rose Anne Kenny, will be held in the Ferrycarrig Hotel on April 8 from 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.

The seminar is organised by the County Wexford GAA Health and Wellbeing Committee in association with Trinity College’s Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TILDA), supported by Irish Life and is open to all interested members of the public.

Did you know that people living by the sea are less likely to be depressed? That optimists live longer? That friendship and a good social life are as important as low cholesterol for heart disease? That quality of life continues to get better after 50 for almost another 30 years?

These revelations and more will be explored by Professor Kenny during the seminar.

Liam Griffin, manager of the Wexford hurling team which won the All-Ireland in 1996 said he is delighted to be one of the Wexford Ambassadors for the event alongside Ned Wheeler.

‘The local GAA organisation in Wexford understands the importance of supporting people to live healthier lives and the seminar will take place in the middle of Wexford Wellness week, organised by the GAA committee in the county’, said Liam.

‘Social connections are essential to living longer and I am looking forward to finding out more about the beneficial influence our social and community connections can have on positive ageing.’

‘The information shared by TILDA, will help all of us embrace the changes that come with ageing and I strongly encourage everyone to attend the event.’ More than 8,500 people over 50 were randomly selected for the TILDA research and continue to be interviewed about many aspects of their lives. The Wexford event will highlight themes including the importance of exercise, diet, social connectedness, purpose, and location.
