Taghmon Horse & Pony trot out another successful fundraiser

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

EACH year budding young jockeys from all over the country make the journey to Taghmon to take part in the Taghmon Horse and Pony Racing’s annual meet. Now in it’s fourth year, the event has gone on to be a real favourite for enthusiasts and in the process the event has become a major fundraiser for local charities.

Following this year’s success, the organisers were delighted to hand over a cheque for €2,200 to Wexford Hospice Homecare to help them continue their wonderful work throughout the county.

Having taken place back in July, the most recent meet saw some 500 people in attendance from all over Ireland and it proved a great family day out with all manner of bouncy castles and stalls.

‘Basically we have young jockeys aged from 8 up to 15 taking part,’ explained one of the organisers Michael O’Keeffe.

‘It gives them a bit of experience and an idea of what a race scenario is like.’

‘We build our own track for the event each year and have all the facilities.’

Michael was delighted with the support this year’s event got and was delighted to be able to hand over the cheque to Joe Costello of Wexford Hospice Homecare, bringing the total raised in the past four years to over €7,000.

‘We’re delighted with the amount raised,’ he said.

‘It’s a costly day with insurance and ambulances and all that kind of thing, so it’s great to be able to have some money to hand over at the end of it. We get great support locally and we’re very grateful.’
