Tattan takes over camogie team

-

WEXFORD CAMOGIE have looked outside the box and appointed Kevin Tattan as their new Senior boss for the 2020 campaign.

Having gone with the ‘hurling man’ last season after appointing Barry Kennedy, this is a departure from the norm and a brave move by County Chairperson Jacinta Roche.

Tattan, ratified as the end of last week, is probably better known for his background in soccer as head of strength and conditioning and sports science at Cork City, but he has also has recently spent time as coach and strength and conditioning trainer with the Cork ladies’ Gaelic football team.

The new boss boasts a first class honours degree in sports and exercise science from the University of Limerick.

Tattan has experience working in Australia with the West Coast Eagles AFL club, and as an S&C coach with Derby County.

Tattan is no stranger to team sports himself, having competed through the years. He was involved with the Midleton F.C. team which won the MSL Premier League Championship in 2018.

The appointment might be met with scepticism in some parts due to the apparent absence of a camogie background, but Wexford need a leader now, someone whose philosophy they can buy into and someone who can put them in the best position to improve.

At the moment, worrying about how good a hurling coach Tattan is is irrelevant, as at this stage Wexford don’t need fine tuning, they need an overhaul by someone that has the energy and patience to keep players content and attentive.

There will be a familiar face looking after the Junior side after Oulart-The Ballagh clubman Alan Brennan was ratified as manager.

Brennan was involved with the second string when John Kelly and Matty Flynn-O’Connor were in charge of the Seniors, and he was able to get some good performances from the side.

He has had a successful spell over the Taghmon-Camross camogie team, as they recently picked up the Junior ‘B’ county title and could double-up by defeating Buffers Alley in a league decider that will be played in the next few weeks.

He knows the landscape in the county and would be a good sounding board for the new Senior boss as he beds into the position in the coming weeks.
