Sadness at the passing of well-known farmer Tom (89)

-

THERE was great sadness recently following the passing of Tom Carty of Galbally, Crossabeg, nine days short of his 90th birthday. A prominent member of the Co Wexford farming community, Tom is greatly missed by his heartbroken family and colleagues across the county.

Tom’s farming life started as soon as he left St Peter’s College. He took over the running of the family farm after the early death of his father Harry in the late 50s.

Early on, he was a successful pedigree Shorthorn Cattle breeder, also keeping commercial cattle and sheep along with growing blackcurrants and cereals. In latter years, he moved on to specialise in cereals.

Tom always took a keen interest in matters outside the farm gate as well as inside. He was one of the founding members of his local Macra na Feirme branch and was also a dedicated member of the Co Wexford Agricultural Show Society for 48 years, serving as trustee for many of them.

In the late 60s, Tom was part of the original committee that established Wexford Farmers Co-op, which went on to build the mart in Enniscorthy - at the time, the largest indoor mart in Europe.

Outside of farming, Tom had a broad range of pursuits. He loved fishing, horse racing, greyhound racing and politics, and took an interest in nearly all types of sport.

He was a well-read man and some of his friends said it was rare to find a subject that Tom didn’t have at least a rudimentary knowledge of.

An honourable man, full of integrity, Tom was a great friend and neighbour and was one of nature’s true gentlemen.

He is survived by his beloved wife May; his children Harry, Anne, John, Thomas and Jane; his sisters Kay and Mina; his grandchildren Tom, Anna, Sarah, Helena and Harry; daughters in law Tara and Caroline; brothers in law; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of friends gathered over many years. May God rest his gentle soul.

Tom’s month’s mind mass takes place this Saturday, December 21, in Crossabeg Church at 7 p.m.
