Kieran and Emer named St Helen’s Bay captains for 2020
ONE of the county’s most successful golf clubs have unveiled its captains for 2020 after day of champagne scrambling and shotgun starts.
Following a year which saw one of their members finish second in the prestigious All-Ireland PGA Tankard competition, St Helen’s Bay Golf Club is intent to cement its reputation as a breeding ground for talented young golfers.
And its new captains will be pivotal in any further successes.
To that end, Kieran Whelan has donned the offical blazer as Club Captain for 2020, replacing the outgoing Padraig Tiernan. Emer Farrell has been named Lady Captain for 2020, replacing Patricia Williams.
And Patricia was full of praise for the people assuming their new roles.
‘The outgoing captains approach them with the possibility of becoming captain. It’s then approved by the committee, there’s a continuity to it. They’ve both been very hard-working vice captains and we’ve no doubt they’ll bring the club on to great things.’
Reflecting on the year gone by, Patricia said Eoin Moore’s second place in the PGA tournament was a particular highlight.
‘We had a very successful year; Eoin Moore came second in the PGA. We’ve our sights set on the final again this year, we’ll be entering team competitions and club ones too.’
Before the captains were named the club members played a round of golf with a difference.
‘We played Champagne Scramble which sees everyone drive off from a different tee around the course. When we were all ready we had to wait for the shotgun to sound before we could start,’ Patricia said.
And the former captain said St Helen’s were always looking for new members, young and old.
Highlighting what makes the club so special she said, ‘The location is a big factor, we’re overlooking the bay and so you have those stunning views.
The course is always kept in immaculate condition. And we have an equal rights timesheet, which means anybody can book in, there’s no preferences given. We’re currently doing membership deals for Christmas too.’
