Ah, New Year’s Resolution­s. Few of us are immune to them and few of us escaped being asked about how we are going to improve ourselves this year.

We all want to start afresh at the beginning of a new year. To shed bad habits and have adopt new ones.

One of the most important things to remember when attempting to get fit is to set realistic expectatio­ns. Overdoing it early on will take a toll so it is important to take advice and take it slow.

There are so many ways to get fit and so many benefits to you – both physically and also mentally – when you get fit.

With the dark mid-winter, early srping evenings still to face into, we all know we can do better than slouching on the couch and watching TV. Balance is important in life and exercise can easily become part of your routine.

The benefits of swimming, running, weight lifting, taking part in fitness classes are all hugely beneficial to us. Exercising releases endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine.

So for a natural high you can’t beat exercise.

The beauty of a gym is it is a place you can go to in all kinds of weather and let’s face it here in Ireland there are often wet days and nights throughout the year. Apart from the physical and mental benefits to going to the gym, there is also the social element.
