Major plans for new boxing club in Ferndale

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

MAJOR plans are afoot to breathe new life into an under-utilised green area in Ferndale, by making it the new home of Na Fianna boxing club.

It’s proposed under the current plans to install the boxing gym along with a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and playground. Na Fianna have long been seeking a permanent home, having temporarily located themselves in the old fire station on Davitt Road. Cllr George Lawlor floated the idea of the move to Ferndale and it already seems to have gained some traction.

‘I was approached by Na Fianna some time ago in their quest to find a proper premises,’ he said.

‘I felt this particular site in Ferndale was under-utilised and underdeveloped and had a lot more potential for young people in the area. It had been laid out as a small soccer pitch, but at certain times of year it’s completely boggy and unusable.’

Cllr Lawlor approached Chief Executive of Wexford County Council Tom Enright with a plan and gained his full support. The next step is that the project will move to Part 8 Planning and will seek planning permission before seeking to obtain grant aid to offset its financial costs.

‘I’ve approached a number of residents about the project in person and the feedback has been largely positive,’ Cllr Lawlor said. ‘It’s early days at the moment, but we need to set the ball rolling and put a proper plan in place to ensure that we can apply for the grants to make this project a reality.’
