EV charging points for hospital

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

WEXFORD General Hospital has become the first acute hospital in the South East to install electric vehicle charge points on site.

The Wexford hospital is rowing in behind the push towards electric vehicles and a greener and more sustainable future, after unveiling three new dual 22kw charge points which will now be available for both staff and visitors to use.

Wexford General was chosen to pilot the scheme with hopes that it will be rolled out to all hospitals in due course. Through the HSE Estates partnership with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), they were able to avail of grant funding towards the project, significantly reducing the financial burden to the hospital. Following a competitive tendering process, GOcharge Ltd successfully applied and installed the charge points last week with assistance from Wexford General’s Maintenance and Technical Services Department and Noel O’Donnell Electrical.

Staff and visitors can now set up an account with GOcharge and are billed for all charging sessions in line with current ESB rates. The charge points themselves will take a standard electric vehicle approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to fully charge from empty. Fair usage and monitoring will be carried out on an on-going basis through both GOcharge and the local WGH support staff.

For details on how members of the public can register to use the charge points, please see the GoCharge website, www.gocharge.ie
