Wexford hosts 48th bridge congress
THE Wexford Bridge Congress will take place this coming weekend in the Talbot Hotel.
Always an important and popular event, it will be 48th running of the competition and a spokesperson for the organisers said ‘it’s sure to live up to the high standards of previous congresses’.
The competitions will run from Friday, February 7, to Sunday, February 9, and visitors from all over Ireland are expected to be in attendance.
Chairman, Michael Coffey and his committee, comprised of members of the various Bridge Clubs that make up Wexford Bridge
Centre, have been busy over the past few months ensuring that everything is in order for the event. Guest of honour for the weekend will be Neil Burke, from Castleknock in Dublin, who is the current President of the Contract Bridge Association of Ireland.
Larry Mordaunt, the South East Region President, from Waterford, will also be in attendance. The Congress will be officially opened in the Talbot Hotel at 7.15 p.m. on Friday evening, by Mr Burke.
The main focus of attention on the opening night will be on the Mixed Pairs competition, however, there will also be separate Intermediate B Pairs, Novice
Pairs and Open Pairs competitions taking place.
Prizes for the Intermediate B and Novice Pairs will be presented on Friday night at the end of the session. The main competitions on Saturday will be the Congress Pairs and Intermediate Pairs events.
Some of Ireland’s best players will be in action in the Congress Pairs contest against top local players while the Intermediate Pairs competition will draw the biggest entry of the weekend and will feature players from all over Ireland.
The Open Pairs competition will be held on Saturday afternoon and again that night.
Prizes for the Mixed Pairs, Congress Pairs and Intermediate Pairs will be presented at the end of competitions on Saturday night.
On Sunday, games will begin early with the Congress Teams-of-Four event due to start at 11 a.m. The Open Pairs will begin at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday and the final session in that category will begin at 7 p.m. that evening.
