Joyces of Wexford – 76 years a local family business
THOUGH it has grown into a large and hugely successful business over the past seven decades, Joyces of Wexford has remained true to the principles embodied by Murt Joyce Snr when he opened his first store on March 24th, 1944. Though the name Joyces is now synonymous with high quality electrical goods and home appliances in Wexford, Murt’s first store at 7 North Main Street was a ‘Hardware Warehouse’.
The Wexford man established a very successful business, based on excellent customer service and value for money. In the late ‘50s Murt was able to move to much bigger premises at 1 South Main Street to facilitate this continuing growth of his business. Due to continued growth and diversification Joyces eventually ended up with four stores in Wexford town.
Murt’s sons Derek and Murt Jnr entered the family business, which they now run, and the family-run operation continued to prosper and in 2005 this led to a move into 16,000 sq. ft. premises in Clonard Retail Park. Joyces are now part of the Expert group, which are a group of 65 independent electrical retailers who combine their resources for the purpose of buying, marketing and retailing electronic goods and household appliances in Ireland.
76 years on, third generation Joyces have joined the business with both Derek and Murt’s sons all working on a part-time basis in the store. So what’s in store for 2020? They have recently completed a Dyson shopin-shop experience and in addition to this, they have plans to revamp the built-in area of the store. They are also planning a number of cookery demonstrations and technology events throughout the year.
