ENNISCORTHY C.B.S. 5-13 COLAISTE IOSAGAIN 3-6

ON A foggy, gloomy day at the ArlesKilleen G.A.A. pitch in Co. Laois recently, Enniscorthy C.B.S. proved too good for Coláiste Íosagáin as they claimed the Top Oil Leinster Schools first year ‘B’ football championship title.

C.B.S. had started in fine form with Shane Reddy, Cormac Casey and Shayne McDonald adding early scores to put Enniscorthy in the lead. A goal came too from a misplaced kick-out straight to Hyland.

He played a long, high delivery bouncing in front of goal, and McDonald cleverly palmed the ball over the ‘keeper’s head to score one of the most intelligent goals seen in an under-age game for some time.

Coláiste Íosagáin opened their account after six minutes with a short range free. From there it was end-to-end stuff with both teams adding a goal to their accounts, with the C.B.S. strike coming from an excellent piece of play by Shane Reddy.

Both teams defended well in the next few minutes, with an exceptional goal-line clearance coming from Mark Palmer to stop a certain goal.

After another point from Coláiste Íosagáin, Seán Hyland, who was very good throughout the early stages, added a goal and a point in quick succession.

The Portarlington school showed that they were not out of the game and added three more points to their tally to make it 3-3 to 1-5 in favour of Enniscorthy.

Before the break C.B.S. add two more points through Cormac Casey and Oscar Redmond.

Jack Nolan was introduced at half-time and was influential in a powerful period for C.B.S. Early into the second-half, Coláiste Íosagáin were on top, hitting two quickfire goals to put only a point between the sides.

The Portarlington boys had a chance to go in front from the penalty spot but, with good mind games from the ’keeper, Eamon Asple, the kick was blasted over for a point.

More scores came from Cormac Casey and Kevin Barron, with the latter tearing apart their defence with two goals in the second-half to make it 4-9 to 3-6, with C.B.S. in cruise control.

Brennan O’Neill was introduced into play and started well with a point, with more scores coming from Hyland and Casey who were crucial in winning the game.

C.B.S. substitutes were influential in the second-half, with Colin Ivers nearly creating a first touch goal after avoiding two heavy tackles to ping the right- and left-hand post before the ball bounced clear.

In the dying stages of the game the midfield pairing were on top, as they were throughout the whole game, allowing C.B.S. to see out the final minutes comfortably.
