Love is in the air as King and Queen crowned for Valentine’s
TRUE love was put to the test at Wexford Harbour Boat and Tennis Club (WHBTC) on Saturday night as couples old and new were quizzed on the finer details of their relationships.
With the title of King and Queen of WHBTC up for grabs competition was fierce, but it was Jim and Stasia Staples who proved their romance was strongest of all.
Despite momentarily forgetting the colour of his wife’s eyes, Jim managed to answer enough questions correctly and burst enough balloons in the special round to ensure he and his beloved went home wearing the crown jewels.
The evening began with the six couples sitting back-to-back and answering questions which included ‘Who is the most stubborn?’ and other, slightly more saucy, queries.
If they answered the same they scored a point, if not it was zero scored and an awkward conversation when they got home.
From there, a special balloon-bursting round, which saw couples sit upon one another in an effort to pop as many balloons as they could within a given time, led to much excitement and friction before the women were sent into the green room to listen to some music.
While they were away the men were asked further questions about love and their beloved, the hope being that the answers provided by the wives and girfriends would tally upon their return.
Madge Redmond and Joe Corrigan narrowly missed out on the top prize but she said it was an enjoyable night nonetheless.
‘The older couples won out in the end. It was a great bit of fun. There was a lot of love in the air and no real arguments, although there were conflicting answers in relation to the colour of Stasia’s eyes,’ she laughed.
‘Jim and Joe are rivals on the tennis court and they brought that rivalry into the games, but in the end Joe had to concede defeat.’
The couples competing on the night were Jim and Stasia Staples, Joe Corrigan and Madge Redmond, Eddie Dempsey and Bernie Morrisey, Lisa Tighe and Conor Kelly, Clodagh Kinsella and Shane Jenkins, and Colm and Dot Byrne.
Maura Doran and Madge Redmond were the event organisers and Madge paid tribute to those who helped to make the event so enjoyable.
‘Maura was the compere and took great care to guard the questions from all contestants. Edel McGrath was score keeper which was a tough job at times. There was a romantic arch constructed by Joe and the children of Curracloe National School also created some love hearts which we used on the night.
‘A big thank you to all sponsors of raffle prizes and the wonderful audience who turned up and participated with such enthusiasm even though Storm Dennis did his best to keep people at home. Thanks also to our brilliant bar staff Fiona and Scott and all who helped make the night such a success as the party continued into the early hours.’
