Girl power, some Meatloaf, and a mercurial show at lip sync battle

- By SIMON BOURKE

THE glory days of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were recreated in front of a packed crowd in the Rathangan Bar, as some of Wexford’s finest lip syncers did battle.

Held to raise funds for St Anne’s GAA Club, the night began with Meatloaf and Cher coming together for a duet, before Queen frontman Freddie Mercury strutted his stuff in his trademark white vest and jeans.

Sarah Clifford, Denise O’Brien, Angela Roche, Jackie O’Brien and Gillian Kennedy then transported everyone back to the mid-nineties and the era of Girl Power and the Spice Girls, before Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, the cast of ‘The Greatest Showman’, and Declan Nerney whipped the audience into something approaching a frenzy.

Eventually, after much deliberation and weighing up of the merits of each contestant, judges Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne declared Bruce Springsteen (Charlie White) and his E Street Band (Mogue Byrne and David Clifford) the winners and invited them back on stage for an encore of ‘Dancing in the Dark’.

However, the real winner on the night was St Anne’s GAA, which received more than €3,000 thanks to the hard work and organisational skills of Jenny Clooney, Jason Kennedy, Mustard, Ann O’Brien and Michelle O’Brien.

Discussing their efforts and the success of the night as a whole, Ann said, ‘It was a great night. It was all a bit of craic really. The crowd couldn’t get over it. The atmosphere was fantastic; they really got into it.

‘The performers were a bit nervous beforehand, a little apprehensive, but the minute they got on stage that went away. The crowd got them going.’

Thanking all the acts, the hosts, judges and audience for their efforts on the night, Ann paid special tribute to Michelle for her work managing the event and preparing the music and intros for the performers.

She also thanked Fastnet Rovers and Bank of Ireland for their donations and the numerous local businesses who sponsored prizes on the night, which included restaurant and drinks vouchers.
