Survey carried out at Adoration Convent

- By SIMON BOURKE

THE presence of heavy machinery at the Adoration Convent on Bride Street was, for some, a signal that works had begun to transform the building into student accommodation for the Georgia Southern University (GSU) learning centre on Spawell Road.

However, Wexford County Council has said that as of yet there has been no transfer of ownership with regards to the Convent and that the works were simply part of a survey to determine the overall condition of the building.

Responding to queries regarding the machinery on the premises, Communications Officer David Minogue said, ‘This work consisted of the completion of some small emergency repairs, some slates had become dislodged during recent storms.

‘While the equipment was in place, the opportunity was also taken to complete some survey works to help in determining the overall condition of the building.’

In October of last year a decision was made to sell the building to Wexford County Council and relocate the remaining seven nuns to the St John of God Convent on Newtown Road.

The Convent is expected to be converted into a halls of residence for students from Georgia Southern University (GSU) attending the new campus in the old County Hall building on Spawell Road.

The campus will facilitate up to 100 students from a variety of academic disciplines with classes expected to begin later this spring.

In the short-term the building directly across from the campus will provide accommodation for students, but the Adoration Convent is set to house the majority of visiting students, providing easy access to the nearby learning centre.
