Paul shows the royals about town

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

MINISTER Paul Kehoe met with a third generation of the British royal family last week as he welcomed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Prince William and Catherine as part of their visit to Ireland.

Having previously met with the Queen and Prince Charles, Minister Kehoe completed the set as he and his wife Brigid met with the royal couple in Dublin before bringing them to the Garden of Remembrance to lay a wreath in memory of all those who had lost their lives in conflict.

Minister Kehoe and his wife spent some 40 minutes with the royal couple and thoroughly enjoyed their company.

‘They are the most down to earth couple you could meet,’ Minister Kehoe said. ‘It was very relaxed talking to them. They really are ordinary people who just happen to live extraordinary lives.’

While Brexit did feature briefly as a topic of conversation, Minister Kehoe chatted to Prince William about the Defence Forces and, of course, his native Wexford.

‘We spoke about the Defence Forces and Prince William told me about his time in the Royal Air Force,’ said Minister Kehoe. ‘I also told him about meeting his father and grandmother and how a lot of people from the UK are now choosing to retire in Wexford.’

Meanwhile Catherine and Brigid chatted about the kids, with the Duchess stating that they pair faced a barrage of questions from their eldest, George, before leaving and he wasn’t happy about being left behind while they flew across the Irish Sea.

‘They really were very nice people and it was an honour to accompany them,’ Minister Kehoe concluded.
