Duffy’s diagnosis a chilling reminder
LEE DUFFY’S revelation that he tested positive for Covid-19 brought the chilling reality of what we are facing into sharp focus for local football followers in particular.
The striker joined Wexford
F.C. at the start of the 2017 season and made an immediate impact, coming off the bench to score the equalising goal in the
90th minute on his league debut away to Cobh Ramblers.
That was his one and only goal for the Ferrycarrig Park crew, and he moved on to pastures new after making nine appearances in total during that
First Division campaign.
His first game had arrived one week before the league started, when Wexford lost a
Leinster Senior Cup tie to Shelbourne on a 4-2 scoreline in
Tolka Park.
Duffy had made his League of Ireland bow with Shels in
2014, and he spent time at Drogheda United and Longford Town before moving on to Wexford.
He went from the south-east back to the Drogs, and has played over the border in the Irish League for the past two seasons, first with Warrenpoint Town and currently with Newry City.
Duffy’s diagnosis served as a stark reminder that being young, fit and healthy doesn’t insulate anybody from potentially being laid low by coronavirus.
The 28-year-old tweeted: ‘I spent 8 days in hospital hooked up to oxygen as I could no longer breathe on my own, scared not knowing what was going to happen. Luckily I got through it and I’m starting to feel a lot better now.’
We wish him a full and speedy recovery.
