Learning by doing at ‘Scientastic’ Day
HANDS on learning was the order of the day at Castlebridge National School as pupils learned all about the STEM subjects and how they can be used in a practical environment.
This day-long workshop was hosted by Scientastic who present science in a simple and straightforward way, allowing children to become real scientists and discover the joys of STEM through hands-on experimentation and interactive activities.
Michelle Maher hosted the workshop and she explained the importance of making science fun for pupils at a young age.
‘Learning through doing is fundamental to what we do. Hands on participation through these projects creates a huge surge of engagement from students as a whole world of possibility opens up around them. We encourage young people to develop an understanding of the world around them, and how to think critically about problems and solutions, key skills needed to address serious 21st century global issues such as climate change.’
And she believes that by introducing children to the STEM subjects at Primary Level we are providing them with skills they will utilise throughout their lives. ‘Without engineering, we wouldn’t have buildings, cars, telephones or even lightbulbs. It is without a doubt one of the most important roles in the modern world. By introducing kids to this world you are opening their eyes to universe of new opportunities.’
A full day’s workshop was kindly cosponsored by local companies Kent Stainless and Keating Insulation. Castlebridge NS were extremely grateful that the two companies could make this worthwhile initiative possible.
