Women’s Refuge staff keeping doors and services open
Frontline domestic violence workers report they are already dealing with an increased number of calls from women experiencing domestic violence and who are reaching out for support and information during this current crisis.
Wexford Women’s Refuge have been working in close contact with Tusla and Safe Ireland regarding these challenges for domestic and gender-based violence services. Women’s Refuge manager Pauline Ennis said: ‘Families experiencing domestic violence will face more isolation and stress having less contact with their families and friends. All community and voluntary agencies are providing ongoing support and their contact details are available online.’
Ms Ennis said: ‘Our dedicated staff are committed to providing a 24 hour emergency service to women. We acknowledge that this current situation can escalate tensions and stress within the household and makes it even more difficult for families already experiencing domestic violence. Our staff are here to help support you through crisis and violent situations. We will listen to you without judgement and understand the impact domestic violence can have on families, especially those living in isolation. We are open 24/7’.
Women who are being violently treated can reach out to the refuge for support simply by calling 1800 220 444.
Over €2 million was secured in 2018 to build 12 new apartments at the new Wexford Women’s Refuge in Maudlintown, but further funding, thought to be in the region of €1m is needed for a childcare facility and other rooms for the service to be able to meet the needs of women and children.
