Temporary reading break for Little Free Libraries
THERE was sad news for book lovers as it was announced that Wexford’s Little Free Libraries have been shut down as a result of concerns over Covid-19.
The initiative, spearheaded by Cllr Leonard Kelly, saw brightly decorated enclosed book shelves placed at points across Wexford town, where people could donate books or take some new reading material. While it would seem that, with people seeking ways to pass the long hours at home, it’s the ideal time for the Free Libraries, Cllr Kelly said that it was with a heavy heart he was forced to close them up.
‘Unfortunately, having sought medical advice, I’ve been advised that the libraries shouldn’t be used until this emergency has passed,’ he said. ‘Whenever that may be, I’d hope to refresh and further expand the network of Wexford Free Little Libraries.’
The little libraries had also served as a location for people to collect the new Covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment forms for those who had no access to a printer. Over 80 forms were distributed before the libraries were forced to close. Meanwhile, Wexford Library have been hanging the forms from their metal gate on Mallin Street, free for people to take as needed.
Sadly the libraries had just been re-stocked by Wally O’Neill of Red Books in Peter’s Square, who last week was forced to take the difficult decision to close up himself. He is, however, still offering free local deliveries and collections via the Red Books Facebook page.
