NEWS IN BRIEF

-

TIPP TOPPLED: Wexford’s best second-half display since David Power took over as manager saw the Senior footballers overcome his native Tipperary in their final Allianz League Division 3 game in Clonmel on April 5.

The visitors erased an eightpoint interval deficit to win by 2-15 to 2-12, with an audacious Ciarán Lyng goal when he lobbed the netminder making all the difference.

The outcome was only of academic interest though, because Wexford had been relegated to Division 4 beforehand.

Wexford: Shane Roche; Jim Rossiter (0-1), Michael Furlong, Páraic O’Keeffe; Brian Malone, Naomhan Rossiter, Kieran Butler (0-1); Michael O’Regan, Colm Kehoe; Eoghan Nolan (0-2), Ben Brosnan (0-2, 1 free, 1 ’45), Tiarnan Rossiter (0-2); Ciarán Lyng (capt., 1-5, 0-2 frees), Graeme Cullen, Kevin O’Grady (1-1). Subs. Anthony Masterson for Roche (HT), Simon Donohoe for Butler, inj. (46), Adrian Flynn for J. Rossiter (55), Rob Tierney for N. Rossiter (55), Jim White (0-1) for O’Regan (60), Niall Hughes for Nolan (60).

OSCARS FOR WEXFORD: A two-goal first-half flourish guided the Wexford Oscar Traynor soccer team to a 2-0 quarter-final victory over Kerry in Ferrycarrig Park on April 3.

Nicky Murphy’s charges took the lead in the 26th minute when Seán Culleton squeezed a Jason Murphy cross through a sea of bodies and into the corner of the net.

And they doubled their haul in first-half added time, with Adam Beary supplying a fine delivery which the lurking John Peare finished to the net with an assured touch.

CELEBRATION TIME: A 1-0 home loss to Peamount United wasn’t the result Wexford Youths Women wanted on April 4, but it didn’t spoil the celebrations in any way as team captain Kylie Murphy was presented with the National League trophy after the game.

GAMES SUCCESS: Kilrush-Askamore recorded a win over Tintern in the Community Games Under-10 indoor soccer final in the Acro Sports Centre in Enniscorthy.

The winning squad featured Cian Lancaster, Seán Kenny, Darragh Dee, Miceál Kinsella, Dean Black, Conal Butler, Ben Walsh and Adam Donohoe.

PORTLAW POINT: Five of the seven winners at the point-to-point hosted by Waterford Foxhounds in Portlaw had Wexford connections.

The reigning Novice champion, Rob James, enjoyed a double, while Shane O’Rourke, Colin Motherway and Eddie Keating also savoured success.

SHANKS ON A WINNER: Former All-Ireland winning hurler Seamus ‘Shanks’ Whelan was owner, trainer and breeder of Piercestown Nial, winner of the unraced stake at Enniscorthy dog track.

ROSS AWARDS: The Horse and Hound in Ballinaboola played host to the annual New Ross District G.A.A. awards, with club honours going to Eddie Haberlin (Geraldine O’Hanrahans), Greg Waters (Fethard), Breda O’Sullivan (Bannow-Ballymitty), Tommy Rowe (Adamstown), Andrew Murphy (St. James’), Tom Corcoran (Gusserane), John Ryan (Taghmon-Camross) and Brendan Dunne (Rathgarogue-Cushinstown).
