This week a quarter of a century ago marked a milestone for Oasis as ‘Some Might Say’ gave them their first number one in the UK.

Written by Noel Gallagher, the track was the band’s last to feature original drummer Tony McCarroll who was replaced by Alan White shortly after its recording.

Oasis performed the song twice on Top of the Pops, the first time being McCarroll’s final performance with the band and the second being White’s first.

‘Some Might Say’, which has sold almost half a million copies to date, served as an appetiser to the second Oasis album ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ which was released in October of 1995.

A seminal album of the Britpop era, it has since sold over 22 million copies worldwide. As well as ‘Some Might Say’, it spawned some other huge hits: ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, which reached number one, and ‘Roll With It’ and ‘Wonderwall’, both of which peaked at No. 2.

‘Some Might Say’ ended the four-week run of Take That’s ‘Back For Good’ at the top of the charts. With sales of more than 1.2 million, the Gary Barlow song is their biggest selling single.

While not known for his love of Take That, Noel Gallagher appreciated the songwriting skill in ‘Back For Good’.

‘If it touches people, it’s a good song,’ he told Mojo in 1997. ‘You know, people go on about Take That – but ‘Back for Good’ said something to me. And if it touches me…’ –
