MINOR MISERY: There was a shock outcome in Innovate Wexford Park on May 9, 2015, when the Wexford Minor hurlers were dumped out of the Leinster championship by Westmeath at the quarter-final stage on a 2-11 to 0-15 scoreline.

The talented Doyle brothers, Ciarán (0-7) and Killian (1-4), broke the home side’s hearts in a result that ranked among the worst-ever for the county, alongside the Under-21 exit to Antrim two years earlier, and Minor defeats to Carlow and Laois in 2006 and 2013 respectively.

JOY DOWN UNDER: Martin Kelly, a jockey from Kilmore Quay, was the toast of racing punters in Australia after he landed the $100,000 feature race on day one of the Warrnambool May Carnival.

The 25-year-old gave the short-priced favourite, Thubiann, a peach of a ride to win the 3,450m Brierly Steeplechase by six lengths.

DELANEY DOES IT: Wexford Youths kept the pressure on Finn Harps at the top of the Airtricity League First Division table after Gary Delaney’s goal in the 34th minute gave them a 1-0 win over Cobh Ramblers at a rain-lashed Ferrycarrig Park on May 8.

RIAN FITZ BILL: Rian Fitzpatrick was the Gorey Rangers star as they produced a stunning comeback to snatch the Wexford and District schoolboys soccer Under-12 Division 1 title out of the hands of North End United on a 3-2 scoreline in Ramstown on May 5.

However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Sky Blues, as their Under-14 team completed a cup final three-in-a-row with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Ferns United at the same venue.

Meanwhile, Eoin O’Meara was the St. Joseph’s hero when his goal nine minutes from full-time won the Under-12 Cup final at the expense of Gorey Celtic in Ramstown.

Ciarán Murphy captained Gorey Rangers to the Under-16 Cup with a 2-0 defeat of Forth Celtic in Curracloe, while Glynn Barntown came back from a goal down to defeat Shamrock Rovers 3-1 in the Under-11 decider.

DERBY DELIGHT: Cloughbawn deservedly claimed the bragging rights in New Ross on May 10 when they pipped arch-rivals Rathnure by 0-16 to 1-12 in the Pettitt’s Senior hurling championship.

Paul Foley landed eight of the winners’ points, seven from placed balls, with Shane Lawlor getting the goal for their rivals whose main marksman, Jack Guiney, split the posts ten times.

Harry O’Connor hit the crucial goal as St. Martin’s saw off St. Anne’s by 1-10 to 0-10 in Killurin, while John Leacy scored all bar one point of Glynn-Barntown’s haul when they saw off Rapparees by 0-11 to 1-6 in Oylegate.

In the other group, a late solo goal from substitute Kevin ‘Shelly’ Roche earned Buffers Alley an exciting 3-14 to 1-20 draw with Ferns St. Aidan’s in Bellefield.

Tommy Storey got the Oulart-The Ballagh goal in a 1-13 to 0-8 success against Faythe Harriers at the same venue, while Shelmaliers eased past struggling Shamrocks in Oylegate by 2-17 to 0-7.

An overhead double to the net by Brian Doyle was followed by a second goal after the interval from James Cash.
