Due to the absence of chemical treatments, water wells are the most environmentally friendly option when it comes to sourcing your water.
Initially, the cost of installing your own well can be high can be high and there are ongoing charges such as pump maintenance and well repair. However, this outlay will be offset by the savings made to utility bills.
The costs involved generally depend on the volume of water you require but it usually costs a minimum of €3,000 to €3,500 to build and kit out your own well.
Grant aid is available for those providing a piped supply of water to an existing house for the first time or carrying out improvements to a deficient existing piped supply of water to a house.
Grants are also available if the dwelling is seven years old or more and not already connected to a public water supply.
As a general rule, a well should be located upslope from, and as far away as possible from, potential sources of pollution.
