Service for the ‘Forgotten Ones’

- By SIMON BOURKE

A Memorial Service for those buried in The Paupers’ Graveyard in Coolcotts, will be held in The Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rowe Street, Wexford at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 19.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the Annual Patron in the Paupers’ Graveyard had to be cancelled, however, this service for the ‘Forgotten Ones’ will be held in its stead.

This private service will be attended by the Mayor of Wexford Cllr. George Lawlor, and members of the Wexford Borough District of Wexford County Council. The Chairperson and committee of Wexford Memorial Trust who organise the Annual Patron will also be in attendance.

The celebrants will include Monsignor Denis Lennon, Fr. Aodhan Marken ADM, Canon Arthur Minion and Fr. Aquino O.F.M.

Music will be provided by a small group of singers from Rowe St. choir and their musical director Donagh Wylde.

Though the service has to be closed to the general public due to social distancing regulations it will be streamed on the Live Church Webcam. Therefore those who normally attend the Annual Patron in the Paupers’ Graveyard will have the opportunity to pay their respects in their own homes and commemorate the lives of the forgotten ones, the men, women and little children buried in the graveyard.

Before the Memorial Service Mayor George Lawlor will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Wexford, the Wexford Borough District and Wexford Memorial Trust - at the Memorial Cross in the Paupers’ Graveyard. He will be accompanied by the Wexford Borough District Manager Angie Laffan and Chairperson of Wexford Memorial Trust, Helen Corish - Wylde.
