New Bullring planter is destroyed by vandals

-

JUST days after it was installed, mindless thugs have vandalised a planter filled with flowers in the Bullring. The lovely wooden planter was flipped onto its side spilling soil all over the town centre landmark, much to the disappointment of passers-by who made the discovery on Tuesday morning.

Quick action was taken to clean the mess up before shoppers began to descend on the newly reopened Main Street, however, members of the public took to Facebook to vent their anger at those responsible. Among them was Cllr Tom Forde.

‘It was fixed very quickly, but it is very disappointing to see a new addition to the Bullring damaged to quickly,’ he said. ‘I’m told that the area is very well covered by CCTV, so I would hope that those responsible will be identified by the footage and the appropriate action will be taken.’

The new planter replaced what had become almost a permanent fixture in the Bullring in recent months - a tent in which a woman and her dog were living. Cllr Forde says that, thankfully, it appears a resolution was reached in that particular case.

‘Obviously, the council has been fielding a lot of calls asking what was going to be done,’ he explained. ‘It was a complicated case, but I’m told by a family member of the woman involved that she’s now engaging with council staff who are working with her to help her get the support she needs. Nobody wanted to see someone living like that in the centre of our town. There are a lot of people out there who’ve fallen on hard times, but the council is doing all it can to work with them and help them.’
