Sinfonia’s Music in Movieland rescheduled for July 2021

- By SIMON BOURKE

BACK in March, when no-one really knew how the coronavirus was going to impact upon our lives, Wexford Sinfonia found itself in something of a quandary.

Its ‘Music in Movieland’ show was due to take place in the National Opera House on March 21, the event was sold out, an orchestra of 160 students were ready and primed to take to the stage.

Thankfully, given what we now know, the event was postponed and the prospect of 900 audience members sitting together and breathing the same air was avoided.

Although many events have since met with the same fate, it was particularly painful for the Sinfonia given how close they had come to their big night.

But now, with the country tentatively reopening and life slowly returning to normal, a new date has been announced for the ‘Music in Movieland’.

‘We have decided to reschedule the show for July 10, 2021,’ said Anne Ó Lionáin of the Wexford Sinfonia. ‘It will all still be the same, ticket holders have been told their tickets are still valid, and the matinee we had organised will go ahead earlier in the day too.’

‘Music in Movieland (and beyond)’ will feature original arrangements of, among others, Somebody to Love (Bohemian Rhapsody), A Million Dreams (Greatest Showman) and Circle of Life (The Lion King), all composed by Liam Bates.

Helping to bring these performances to life will be student choirs from Bridgetown College, St Peter’s College, Presentation Secondary School, Loreto Secondary School Wexford, CBS Wexford, and Gorey Community School.

The show itself will take place at 7.30 p.m. while the matinee, which gives attendees the opportunity to watch the orchestra rehearse, starts at 4 p.m.

And despite offering refunds for all those who had previously purchased tickets for either show, Anne said no-one had yet asked for their money back.

Hopeful that by next summer the restrictions on public gatherings will have eased, Anne said there were a couple of other reasons why they had chosen July for the rescheduled show.

‘All the students who were in Sixth Year will still be a part of the performance, we wanted to host it in July so that they would have the opportunity to come back if they wanted to. Also, we wanted to make sure it didn’t interfere with next year’s Leaving Cert.’

Anne said the orchestra would meet up in the week prior to the show to sharpen up their timing, but said much of the music had already been ‘burned into the brains’ of the performers after months of practise earlier this year.
