SHOP LOCAL TO PROTECT LOCAL JOBS

-

EVER since June 6 businesses across Co Wexford are once again open having made incredible efforts to ensure the safety of their customers.

Covid-19 saw them have to close their doors, not knowing when they could reopen - facing suddenly into an unknown and unknowable future. Their staff, many of whom having served for years alongside them, were also left in the dark and it is only over the past few weeks that any semblance of normality has returned to the high streets of our towns and the main streets of our villages.

By shopping local this week you can play your part in protecting the retail life of one of our county’s fantastic towns and villages. Every euro spent in a shop has a multiplier effect, helping to pay the wages of staff and to contribute to the income of local service providers.

The local economy is worth millions to Co Wexford every month and now, more than ever, our shop and supermarket and all business owners need your support.

For weeks leading up to their openings, business owners have had to do several risk assessments, invest in Personal Protective Equipment, hand sanitiser, thermometers, face shields, perspex screens and other items – all to ensure the safety of their customers.

Where else but the shop in your local town or village do you get a warm welcome, a smile, a hello and it’s a lovely day.

It has been extremely difficult for business owners to not be able to interact with their customers for several weeks. There is a pent up demand and by shopping local and not pressing that button on your phone for another online purchase – (which could take weeks to arrive) – you are putting some money in the pockets of people who are employing people in your locality. They are the ones sponsoring fundraisers and investing in their businesses, often by painting them and thereby improving the look of the town.

Retail therapy is good for everyone these days. We’ve all had our fill of the weekly shop and at last are unleashed to go spend, spend, spend and get some new summer clothes in anticipating of doing something extravagant like going out for a meal, getting a haircut, meeting friends for a drink, going to the cinema or splurging on high heels or new summer sandals.

There is a world of choice, value and quality outside your door in your nearest town or village, so why not go and enjoy.

By doing so you’ll be giving back to your community and making the future of businesses far more secure.
