DONOHOE’S SOCIETY

Donohoe’s Golf Society played Rathaspeck Manor on Sunday. We had great numbers playing on our first morning back, with 18 participants in total.

First home was club Chairman Andrew Holden, winning with a great score of 37 points. In second place was Anto Kelly with 36 points, and third place went to John Sullivan with 35 points.

Cliff Weeber won the birdie money with three birdies overall. Not to be outdone, congratulations are extended to John Cahill who had a hole-in-one on the 15th.

Andrew Holden and ‘Prof’ Nolan shared the previous played month’s player of the month competition prize.

Next week we play Blackwater. As usual, please bring the correct money to play and be there by 8.45 a.m. at the latest.

WEXFORD

The big news story this week was the decision taken at both our ladies’ and gents’ committee meetings (via Zoom of course) to defer most of our major competitions from this year until 2021.

These competitions are the gents’ President’s and gents’ Captain’s prizes, the gents’ President’s prize and gents’ Captain’s prize to the ladies, and also the ladies’ President’s prize, the ladies’ Captain’s prize, and the lady Captain’s prize to the gents.

This is the first time in our history that such a decision has had to be made and, given the unique situation that we find ourselves in, these committees are to be congratulated on making this swift and timely decision.

Both committees have approved another decision, which is to propose at our next A.G.M. that both ladies’ and gents’ Presidents, Captains, Vice-Captains and Junior Captains be invited to continue their roles for 2021.

The only gents’ major competition to be played this year will be the Howlin Cup, a matchplay competition that is as old as our club. This competition has been sponsored by our close neighbour, Brendan Howlin T.D., for a number of years.

An entry sheet is on display in the locker room, and the BRS notice from the competition committee of Saturday, June 13, confirms those membership categories eligible to enter this competition. The closing date for entries is Saturday, June 27.

The winners of the daily draw last week were: Monday, Paul Kelly; Tuesday, Philip Dowdall; Wednesday, David O’Sullivan; Thursday, Martina Flynn; Friday, Billy Boggan.

Play continues this week at 14-minute tee intervals, and there are tee-times for both threeballs and fourballs.

On a personal note, I played golf on our course for the first time since the lockdown on Monday, and I have to compliment our permanent course staff, Jake, John and Joe, and the ‘summer staff’ of John, Kevin and John on the superb condition that our course is in. Well done lads.

Finally, stay safe, golf locally, and, above all, shop locally, Wexford businesses need our support.
