Tipp toppled in thrilling finish to U14 final

-

THE WEXFORD Under-14 ladies’ football team trailed by a goal with just over three minutes to go in the All-Ireland ‘B’ final in Freshford on June 12, 2010.

Aisling McCarthy had just kicked a point for rivals Tipperary, and they were looking good to take the title.

However, giving up wasn’t part of the make-up of this particular Wexford team, and they emphasised that point in emphatic fashion.

One minute later, it looked like player of the match Ciara Rossiter was going to equalise, only to see her shot fly over the bar.

Wexford won the kick-out and again ‘Rossi’ got in behind the defence, only this time her shot came back off the goalkeeper.

She kept her head, though, gathering the breaking ball and this time making no mistake to put her side one point up as the game entered injury time.

Wexford were now on the verge of the title, and Adamstown’s Ellen O’Brien put the icing on the cake when she jinked and soloed her way goalwards before kicking the insurance point to guarantee a dramatic 4-8 to 4-6 victory.

It was a game to remember, with full-back Breda Cummins also excelling for the winners.
