Caution urged over ‘second wave’

CARTHY STRESSES IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING COVID ‘TOP OF AGENDA’

- By SIMON BOURKE

COUNCILLOR Ger Carthy has warned of the dangers of complacency as cases of Covid-19 continue to drop across the country.

Speaking at the meeting of the Rosslare Municipal District yesterday, Cllr Carthy, who works as an Advanced Paramedic with the National Ambulance Service, stressed the importance of keeping the pandemic at the ‘top of the agenda’ in the currrent climate.

‘Covid-19 hasn’t gone away and the last thing we need is another surge,’ said Cllr Carthy. ‘With everything that’s going on at the moment and the formation of a new Government, it’s important we keep the coronavirus at the top of the agenda.’

‘There’s been a great response from everyone and let’s just hope we’re now moving in the right direction.’

Thanking frontline workers for their contribution during the height of the pandemic, Cllr Carthy said their efforts had helped protect the ‘most vulnerable members in our society’.

Echoing his sentiments, Fine Gael Councillor Jim Moore said the local response to the virus had ‘put to bed’ the theory that local authorities had limited influence in society.

‘What’s happened in Wexford has put to bed the notion that local authorities have limited authority in society. The national response to the pandemic was based on what was happening in the local authorities.’

Meanwhile, Aontú’s Jim Codd was concerned about the impact a second wave of the virus would have on those living in remote parts of the county.

‘A great concern I have going into the winter is that a second wave of Covid-19 could go hand in hand with the flu, and we might not be able to distinguish them from one another.

‘And for those people in rural areas who don’t have broadband, their phone lines might be down, there could be breaks in electricity services, they might not be in a position to make themselves known. I’d be very, very cautious of a second wave coming,’ said Councillor Codd.
