Sadness at death of retired detective Pat Mulcahy

-

There is widespread sadness in Wexford following the death on Monday of the well-known retired Detective Garda and former award-winning sportsman Pat Mulcahy.

Pat spent 38 years as a Garda in Wexford before retiring from the force in 2010. A native of Kilkenny, he came to the town in the early 1970s after passing out at Templemore and was stationed here for his entire career, becoming a Garda Detective a number of years after his arrival.

He was involved in many high-profile investigations, including the Fr Sean Fortune abuse case, a court prosecution in Bruges, Belgium following the shocking deaths of eight immigrants found in a lorry container at Drinagh Business Park in 2001, and the Catherine Nevin murder trial.

At the time of his retirement from An Garda Síochána, Pat thanked the people of Wexford, saying that even though many of his encounters were on sad occasions, he met some great people.

A very talented sportsman in his younger days, he won an All-Ireland under 21 hurling medal with his native Kilkenny in 1974. The following year, he played with Wexford against Kilkenny in the Leinster Senior Hurling Final. He hurled in Wexford with the Faythe Harriers and won a county intermediate football medal with the Volunteers in 1983. He also played soccer with North End and was a talented golfer with Wexford Golf Club.

The news of his death following an illness, was greeted with deep sadness by his former colleagues and many friends in Wexford. A son of the late Jack and Mary Mulcahy, Pat is survived by his partner Fiona, his daughter Maria; his granddaughter Sara; his brothers Joe and John; his sister Mary; son-inlaw Stephen; the Murphy family; his niece and nephews and his extended family and friends.
