Performance space needed for the quays
CALLS are being for a permanent performance space to be installed on Wexford’s Quayfront. With decades of experience in theatre and the performing arts, Michael Way believes that the annual appearance of The Spiegeltent on the quay shows the potential for a similar multi-purpose venue all year round, leading to his proposal of ‘The Longhouse Pavilion’.
Michael’s latest suggestion comes following positive feedback for his plan to place feature fountains on the iconic Ballast Bank in Wexford Harbour and he hopes to discuss his proposals in more detail with elected representatives when conditions allow.
‘The Spiegeltent Festival has highlighted four core factors,’ Michael said. ‘That a theatre on the quay can be financially viable; a theatre on the quay can be technically viable; a theatre on the quay enhances the day to day vitality of the quay and a theatre on the quay allows for other events which require open space.’
Drawing inspiration from Wexford’s Viking history Michael is suggesting the construction of a Viking style ‘longhouse pavilion’ where the Spiegeltent would usually be situated, providing a ‘flexible performance space ideal for theatre, musical theatre, pantomime, all types of music, conferences and open space as a substitute for marquee accommodation for festivals and other annual events’.
He added that the venue could be made available to promoters such as Lantern for their yearround programme and also be made available to the Panto and the Drama Festival.
Wexford County Council previously revealed plans to build a theatre within the Trinity Wharf development, however, this could take some time to come to fruition.
