Michael was a generous human being who never forgot his roots

-

THE high esteem in which Michael Goggin of Moorfields, Rathaspeck, formerly of Ballygarron, Crossabeg, was held was evident by the huge volume of messages both prior and post burial. Michael passed away peacefully following an illness at Wexford General on Thursday, December 17 surrounded by wife Myra and family.

Michael is survived by wife Myra, son Michael, daughter Sinead, daughter-in-law Stephanie, grandson MJ together with brothers and sisters. The burial took place in Ballymore, and the liturgy was led by Fr Marty Byrne who was a close friend of Michael’s for many years.

Michael was born in Rathangan in what was previously McCall’s cottage, the eldest of nine children born to the late Michael and Mary Goggin. They relocated to Ratholm, Killinick when Michael was seven years-old, where he continued to live until he emigrated to London in 1959.

A carpenter by trade, Michael worked on the buildings in London where he met his wife Myra and married in 1966.

They returned home to Wexford in 1971 where Michael continued to work in the building industry until 1975. Changing direction Michael purchased a shop outlet in North Main St where he continued trading in hardware until he retired in 2005. He grew his business on North Main St through hard work, good planning and attention to detail. His treatment of his customers was second to none and he was way ahead of his time when it came to after sales service and general customer care and satisfaction.

His shop was always a hive of activity, and many friendships were made and nurtured within the shop business. The tributes afforded to Michael on his retirement from the shop were a testament to the respect in which he was held by the Wexford business community.

Michael’s leisure activities centred around shooting, fishing and golf, in his later life he was as competitive on the golf course as he was behind the counter and the high point was winning the captain’s prize at Rosslare Golf Club in 2010.

This particular prize always took pride of place in the Goggin household.

Michael was a good businessman who never forgot his roots, and was most often described as a generous human being. He is sadly missed and mourned by Myra and his family. May he rest in peace.
