Mighty Mary completes a marvellous national treble with two 5-0 successes

- BOXING

NA FIANNA Boxing Club from Wexford town had a busy few weeks with a strong involvement in the national championships.

Boy 2 (twelve years old) Pearse Redmond was up against last year’s Irish champion from Connacht in the final.

Pearse put up a brave performance and after three rounds was beaten by the reigning champion from Sligo. This is Pearse’s first year boxing, and he will only be better for the experience in the coming seasons.

Tommy Harpur (Boy 2) was out to avenge his loss in last year’s final against the Dublin champion, who was also the current Irish title-holder.

Tommy was very unlucky to be on the receiving end of a defeat, once again despite a close three rounds where both boxers gave everything they had.

Mary Furlong (Junior 1 – 15 years old) was boxing for her third national title, having won the last two in impressive style.

Mary boxed a very strong Munster champion, Shakira Cairns from Cork, in the semi-final and won 5-0 with a dominant performance.

In the final she faced the Ulster champion from Omagh, Riona Devine. Once again, Mary was given a 5-0 winning margin from the adjudicators at ringside in the National Stadium to complete a tremendous treble as Irish champion.

Mary will now be busy getting ready for the Senior cadets which is taking place in a couple of weeks.
