Wexford Tidy Towns stalwart Phil Murphy unveils a new look after charity headshave

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

NO stranger to The Bullring, Wexford Tidy Towns stalwart Phil Murphy was without her high-vis vest and litter picker as she arrived at her regular stomping ground on Saturday.

A woman on a mission, Phil was surrounded by supporters and friends as she took the major step of shaving her head to raise funds for Relay for Life Wexford as part of their efforts for the Irish Cancer Society.

In advance of the big shave, Phil revealed that the cause was one that’s incredibly close to her heart.

“I lost two amazing sisters and my beautiful mother to cancer,” she said. “I don’t know any family that hasn’t been affected by it in one way or another.

“I’m a little bit nervous about it, but the way I look at it, I’m honoured to be able to do something. I have the choice to do this, my sisters didn’t, and my hair will grow back hopefully!”

A GoFundMe campaign was launched ahead of the big day and Phil was delighted to see the total surpass €2,500, that’s not to mention the donations that were collected in buckets at the Bullring on the day.

Donations are still being accepted and you can donate on the GoFundMe page which is posted on the Wexford Tidy Towns Facebook page.

“I’m so delighted,” Phil said of the support she’s received so far. “People are so good. They are still making donations. I just feel privileged to be able to do it.”
