Swimming club races attract over 170 entrants

WEATHER conditions were calm and warm for Wicklow Swimming Club’s races last Sunday, June 12. One-hundredand-seventy-four swimmers of all ages took part in the four categories of events.

First up were the Junior sprints with 44 participan­ts. The boys results were: U6 – 1st Bill Guinan; U8 – 1st Kian Copeland, 2nd Frank Ahearne, 3rd Ted Hasler; U10 – 1st Jacob Fry, 2nd Andre Kravchenko, 3rd Joss Huilin; U12 – 1st Brian Johnston, 2nd Mike Connolly; U14 – 1st Luigi Rea.

The girls results were: U6 – 1st Ruth Connolly, 2nd Sadbh Tyrell; U8 – 1st Lauren Beacom, 2nd Ruby Hasler, 3rd Erica Huilin; U10 – 1st Amy Noble, 2nd Sienna Brennan, 3rd Aine Vize; U12 – 1st Eadaoin O’Keane, 2nd Laura Griffin, 3rd Saoirse Dolan;

The Junior challenge was next, with Aine Vize coming first, Jacob fry in second and Marie Galligan in third.

Eighteen Intermedia­tes raced for the Jack Malone cup; 1st Charlie Pierce, 2nd Mia McCann, 3rd Nathan O’Connor.

The Youths were swimming for the Binnion cup, kindly sponsored by the Binnion family, 16 competitor­s swam 450 metres in a race that seen Conor McInerney take first place, with Emma Kristensen in second and Emily Clark in third place.

There were 69 seniors swimming 600 metres for the Bank of Ireland cup; 1st Brian Kelly, 2nd Claire Moulders, 3rd Tara Kilalea.

Racing for this week starts on Friday evening, June 17, with the first of the open seaswims. The men’s race starts at 6.45 p.m. and the women’s race starts at 7.30 p.m. The start point is at Travalhawk with finish at The Glen Strand, The course measures approximat­ely 1.5km. There is limited parking at the start point and finish points with additional parking available at St Patrick’s GAA Club. The presentati­on of prizes will take place after both races in St Patrick’s GAA Club. The race schedule for Sunday, June 19, is 10.15 a.m. for Junior Sprints, 10.30 a.m. for Junior Challenge, 11 a.m. for Intermedia­tes (Humby family cup), 11 a.m. Youths (Drennan Cup), and noon the seniors race for the Humby family cup ( Vartry Garage).
