Shane Ross, the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport and an Enniskerry resident, recently launched National Bike Week 2016 with Alison Canavan.

The week is currently under way and continues until this Sunday, June 19, celebrating and promoting all that is great about cycling.

For the nearest bike week events or to join in a cycling adventure, go to www.bikeweek.ie.

In Bray, ‘Sprocket Rocket Sessions’ will be under way at the bandstand from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, June 18.

Kids aged seven to 11 can bring their bikes and learn skills. ‘Cycling is a great way to get around, and with National Bike Week promoting cycling this June, I hope to see more and more people enjoying the benefits of choosing a bike as their mode of transport,’ said Minister Ross.

‘Bike Week not only promotes the leisure and fun aspects of cycling as a family, with friends, to sightseeing - it also highlights the other great benefits, health, saving money and efficiency. It is also a great solution to beating traffic congestion in our towns and cities.’ SCHOOLS AND clubs across County Wicklow could be in with a chance to win a training session with Olympic gold medallist Katie Taylor, thanks to a new competition launched this week.

Bray boxer Katie and her mum Bridget are working with International Olympic Committee partner Procter and Gamble ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as part of P&G’s ‘ Thank You, Mum’ campaign, which emphasises the fact that it takes someone strong to make someone strong.

P&G and SuperValu are now calling on schools, sports teams and clubs from around the county to show them what makes them strong, to be in with a chance to with the once in a lifetime session with Katie.

Anyone wishing to enter must purchase a P&G product in their local SuperValu, visit www.trainwithkatie.ie and share a photo of their school or club’s bravest moment.

The competition is open until June 29, when five shortlisted entrants will be chosen.

A public vote will then take place until July 21 with the winner being announced at the beginning of August on Katie’s Twitter account.
